THE ART OF SAYING NO: Protecting Your Time and Energy

Writer: Tina ValenTina Valen

Have you ever found yourself nodding along to someone’s request, even though your inner voice is screaming, “Noooo!”? I've been there. 🙈 We’ve all been there—whether it’s agreeing to bake cookies for the school fundraiser (when you don’t even have time to bake for yourself) or taking on yet another work project when your plate is already overflowing. It’s time to flip the script and learn the art of saying "no"—not just for your sanity, but to protect your precious time and energy! 🌟

Saying No

Why Saying No is a Superpower

Saying "no" isn’t just a boundary—it’s a superpower! How? When you master this skill, you’re not just dodging unwanted tasks. You’re carving out space for what truly matters in your life: your goals, your happiness, and yes, even your peace of mind. It’s about reclaiming your energy and using it where it counts.

But let’s be real—saying "no" can feel awkward, especially if you’re a people-pleaser or someone who fears conflict. That's my background with this anyway so if you can relate, keep reading. The good news? It doesn’t have to be! Saying "no" can be done gracefully, without guilt, and with a sense of empowerment. Here’s how!

Strategies for Saying No Without the Guilt

Ready to make saying "no" a breeze? Let’s dive into some strategies that’ll help you set those boundaries like a pro:

  1. Know Your Priorities: Before you can say "no" confidently, you need to be clear about what you’re saying "yes" to in your life. Grab a pen and paper (or download our handy Work-Life Balance worksheet👇) and jot down your top priorities. When a request doesn’t align with these, it’s a clear sign that a "no" is in order.

  2. Practice Makes Perfect: Saying "no" is like flexing a muscle—the more you do it, the stronger you get. Start small. Maybe it’s saying "no" to that extra TV episode when you need sleep, or declining a coffee date when you’d rather recharge solo. The more you practice, the easier it becomes to say "no" to the bigger asks.

  3. Be Polite but Firm: You don’t need to be a robot to set boundaries! 😉 A simple, “I appreciate you thinking of me, but I’ll have to pass this time” works wonders. It’s polite, to the point, and leaves little room for pushback.

  4. Offer an Alternative: If the thought of a flat-out "no" makes you squirm, try offering an alternative that still protects your time. “I can’t attend the meeting, but I’m happy to review the notes afterward,” shows you’re still contributing without overcommitting.

  5. Trust Your Gut: Your intuition is powerful—listen to it. If something doesn’t feel right or if you’re feeling stretched too thin, trust that it’s okay to decline. Remember, your energy is a limited resource, and it’s up to you to protect it.
